THE CANOE

We paddle a 26′ Voyageur "North Canoe," built by Clipper Canoes of Abbotsford Canada. The Voyageur's design is  tried and true and is a replica of what would have been used by the fur traders who explored the Lake Superior and the northern wilderness in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Voyageur can be paddled in many conditions from open Lake Superior Waters to extended wilderness expeditions on rivers of inland lakes. With great stability and speed the Voyageur is a great option for any paddling party. As unlikely as it sounds, the Voyageur has even been used to pull water skiers!

About

Explore Duluth's North Shore like the Voyageurs! Our voyageur North Canoe is designed just like the boats the fur traders would have used to explore and trade goods in the North Woods. The canoe easily holds 10 adults and requires no previous paddling experience.

The private charter makes paddling a breeze! The canoe requires at least 4 adults to paddle and can take up to 9 adults and a small kid or two. The private tour can be taken anywhere in the Duluth area and we typically paddle for 2 hours. Longer tours can be arranged.

Our 2 hour tours will launch from various locations around Duluth and explore the are and conditions allow we will paddle the open waters of Lake Superior. There are 9 "seats" available per tour. The canoe needs at least 4 able body voyageurs to paddle safely. There are 9 paddling seats available and additional room for non-paddling children. The north canoe is also a great party or team building adventure.

THE TRAIN

The original Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad was the first railroad into Duluth. After several years of surveying, preparation and laying track, the first train traveling from St. Paul arrived in Duluth at 11:30 PM, August 1, 1870. The advent of this rail link was considered the most important event in the history of the state of Minnesota, as well as in the railroad development of the country. The 154 miles of track connected the head of navigation on Lake Superior with the head of navigation on the Mississippi River. This opened up a viable means to transport goods to Lake Superior for shipping to Eastern markets.

The section of track from Thomson to Fond du Lac, known as the skally line followed the St. Louis River through Jay Cooke Park. This portion of the original track had uneven terrain, a steep and long (nine mile) grade and high wooden trestles. These trestles were difficult to maintain and posed a fire threat due to the wood burning locomotives of the day. The Duluth Short Line Railway built an alternate route into Duluth in 1888 largely following the current Munger Trail eliminating the dangers of the skally line.

*Note: the train does not travel through Jay Cooke.

ABOUT

Canoeing is a safe, fun way for novice to expert paddlers to explore the many waterways of the Duluth area. It's also a great family activity as the youngster can enjoy the paddle while duffing. Duffing, or riding in the boat's center compartment, is a great beginning place for all young paddlers. Though duffers may not be helping to propel the boat, they are learning about the feel of a canoe.

Canoeing is a great way for families with very young kids to get out for a paddle. With everyone in the same boat parents can keep kiddos happy and entertained. If anyone needs to stretch their legs, there are lots of islands to get out and explore!

We offer two tour durations: 2-hours and 4-hours (by special request). For groups with 4 or more able paddlers, check out our 10 person voyageur canoe! It's a great way for groups with varying levels of experience to be all together!
